In Nebula, Vania Vaneau approaches the human body-nature relationship as the meeting of force fields in a post-apocalyptic context.

In a kind of archaeology of the future, Nebula questions what other relationships to time, craft, soil, and chimeras could emerge to draw a new cosmogony. What mutations and hybridizations could come out of chaos?

With the collaboration of visual artist and scenographer Célia Gondol, Vania Vaneau centers her research on the relation between metamorphosis, apparitions, materials, and gestures, that are at once archaic and telluric. It is about revealing the original state of the elements, creating healing rituals, fertilizing the space, and exploring notions of catharsis and ecstasy.

Nebula is also a crossing into the unknown, a moment of eclipse to glimpse at other possible worlds. Here, the future and the past meet, time flows in a spiral leading us to a “prehistoric science-fiction”.

Nebula is a solo, created in two versions: one for natural and outdoor spaces  and one for indoor spaces.

Workshop lab with Vania Vaneau at MDT Stockholm

Vania Vaneau held a workshop for local artists in Stockholm. MDT organised the workshop in collaboration with Dansalliansen. Dansalliansen is an organisation that employs a number of freelance dancers in Sweden when they are between work, and also organise workshops, lectures etc for the development of the individual dancers and the field. This collaboration is important as a way to spread MDT’s and Life Long Burning’s activities broader than MDTs specific community. We also see the importance to collaborate with organisations who’s direct purpose is to strengthen and support the freelance field, especially in a time of pandemic/post pandemic working conditions.

The workshop had a studio at MDT as a starting point, but also moved outside, working with practices related to nature. The group worked at Skeppsholmen, the island where MDT is located, and for the second day took a trip in the archipelago to have a full day of outside work and develop practices and rituals related to the surroundings. 

Vania’s description of the workshop:

Vania Vaneau will share some of her research for the solo piece Nebula (2021) which takes place both in natural places and in theaters. The starting point for the piece is a post apocalyptical landscape, joining both pre historic practices and a futuristic projection, in the aim to find ways to reactivate life from a destroyed situation. During the two/three days, the group will work both inside and outside, relating the body with a local natural landscape, and then will be invited to create their own practices/rituals individually and as a group in that particular space. The work will be about care, transformation, land art, meetings, handcraft and activation of relations between human and non-human beings and materials.

The different experiences made during the lab will be then shared with the groups of the two other cities through scores, mail art or any other form of transmission. Aiming to relate different geographical places and recreate one nature and new bodies in a changing environment
