Friday, November the 12^th : public opening The Shipyard

From 8 to 12 November, the Studio Bagouet at ICI-CCC becomes an ephemeral and public architectural design workshop. The thread running through it is rest, a space to be designed, described and fitted out, where the survivors must be able to find sleep again. Architects, students, designers, visual artists, exiles, rescue sailors, etc. meet to experiment with the refuge on a scale of 1, to specify the possible uses of the spaces, and also to compile a repertoire of practices, gestures and care. The Bagouet studio became one of the spaces for the invention of this lifeboat requiring skills, experience and multiple, shared visions.

ICI—CCN is hosting PEROU (Centre for the exploration of urban resources) for the Biennale des Arts de la Scène en Méditerranée, a biennial festival of Mediterranean Performing Arts. PEROU is currently developing an application for UNESCO to recognise the act of hospitality as intangible cultural heritage. With this in mind, PEROU is busy designing a ship for the Mediterranean dedicated to sea rescue teams, to amplify their lifesaving acts and pass them on to future generations. Work to design and build the vessel began at the Centre Pompidou-Metz and has now expanded nationwide, with input from numerous research and creative venues. 

The ship design workshop takes place on 9 to 12 November at the ICI—CCN centre. Architects, designers, visual artists, survivors, lifesavers and residents from Montpellier will work together on the project and experiment, in particular, with the full-size layout of specific living quarters aboard the ship. For four days, the Bagouet Studio will be transformed into one of the spaces to invent this lifesaving ship that requires skills, experience, desire and a myriad of shared visions.

PEROU, the centre for the exploration of urban resources, is working on an application for UNESCO to recognise the act of hospitality as intangible cultural heritage. The goal is to shine a light on the beauty and reach of gestures and acts of friendship that people today make in Europe towards those seeking shelter here. The application requires various supporting documents to be assembled (written, photographs and film) as well as developing an action plan to support these gestures and acts and to pass them on to future generations. This is the challenge behind plans to build a ship for the Mediterranean that will soon be available to organisations saving lives out on the open sea. The vessel will champion and safeguard life-saving acts as well as welcoming survivors aboard. PEROU Activity Coordinator, Sébastien Thiéry, will make a guest appearance at the La Vignette Theatre to present the ongoing work and explain, in particular, how to take part in designing and building the vessel. Design input is currently being gathered from a combination of numerous European art schools and cultural centres, such as the ICI—CCN centre, which is being transformed into an architectural design studio for the public from 8 to 12 November.
