Wild Card Residency in Budapest for Milan Loviska & Otto Krause

In the frame of the Wild Card activity, the network partner Workshop Foundation offers a residency slot to the network partner danceWEB that chose the Austrian based artists Milan Loviska and Otto Krause for this slot.

Milan Loviska and Otto Krause are on the residency in Budapest from 12 to 25 February 2018 and are working on their latest production "FURRIOUS".

They use use diverse and often marginal performative formats and strategies to question established modes of perception and to inspire uncanny perspectives on relations of audience and performer. They put the emphasis on long-term research processes based on wide-ranging knowledge and expertise not only of the field of arts, but also sciences, technology and pop culture, the areas which they draw inspiration from. They devise physically intensive and imaginative performances that range from larger scale theatre stage works to intimate one-on-one situations in gallery settings. They live in Vienna and show their works at venues, festivals and symposia around Europe and Asia, such as ArtScience Museum in Singapore, ISEA in Hong Kong, Biennial of Slovenian Contemporary Dance in Ljubljana, Tanzquartier, Brut and WUK in Vienna among others.

In their residency project Otto and Milan will investigate the processes and procedures of furrification and plushification of performative spaces, actions, roles, objects, and events. Similar to fursuiting, the anthropomorphic fetish of dressing in full-bodied plush fur animal costumes that is as a practice undertaken by members of a subculture called the furry fandom, this hybrid plushophilia can be then seen as a portal through which to escape the physical, spiritual, psychological or sexual constraints imposed by the human body and by human consciousness. Instead of attempting to reproduce animality as it appears in the natural world, the plushophilic fetish necessitates here rather a notably artificial and abstract sensibility that plays with the boundaries of both the contemporary western aesthetic category of cute and the Japanese concept of kawaii. This Furrotopia is a performative strategy to create new subjectivities, and to deviate its participants from the everyday experience into the realm of the imaginary, where change and transformation is possible and speculative.

The residency at Workshop Foundation in Budapest is their first deep dive into the topic that will culminate in a work-in-progress public presentation in the Trafó Studio. Later on, the project will be further developed in collaboration with Blitz Residency programme, Valletta / European Capital of Culture 2018 (MT).
